BIOGRAPHY

Jai Mitchell
(B. 1972)
"(Jai) is a soul portraitist who, like Munch, depicts psychological states that torment him."
-Nicola Kuhn, Der Tagesspiegel
Jai Mitchell is a self taught artist. As he found art therapy in 2014 he used it as the pathway to a new beginning. Through his work he came to realize that the paths that lead to fear, anxiety, depression and hopelessness are not dead ends. With the right tools and support, those paths lead to creative breakthroughs.
Jai’s works often evoke the dark night of the soul, but it is his hope that everyone will recognize the call of that voice, and reach back out to it in its hour of need.
In his work, artist and filmmaker Jai Mitchell explores the way art allows one to process past trauma and pain and continuously explore childhood wounds laying a path towards healing and emotional resurrection.
He lets us into his world and courageously shares his intimate life stories through powerful and deeply moving pieces. Jai’s art shocks, inspires and lifts a veil into his soul and invites us to feel both pain and joy from connecting to that raw core of the toughest and the most beautiful part of our being.
In 2019, Jai partnered with author Jeffery Pierce to create the chapter art for Pierce’s “The Reckoning” series. There are currently three books in the apocalyptic science fiction series, and a fourth is in the works.
Jai has shown in Berlin, Barcelona, Milan, Washington DC, and in the Metaverse through Ali Jay Fine Art Gallery in Art Gate VR. Jai’s artwork can be found in private collections in US and Canada.
Born in 1972, Jai lives and works in the Washington, D.C. area. He recently retired from coaching a rowing team for The Capital Adaptive Rowing Program. He is also an award-winning filmmaker with degrees from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the New York Film Academy. In 2002, he was the runner-up in the D.C.-area’s 48-Hour Film Project. He won the grand prize at the RAF Film Festival in Croatia in 2004 for his short film, Botoxia, and was the 2005 runner-up for his short film, The Apple. In addition to his ongoing artwork endeavors, Jai is the Creative Director, Assistant Director, and Associate Producer for a $55-million CGI animated movie in development called The Riffratz, which is to be directed by Patrick Klein. Jai
is on the board of The Aplomb Project, a 501(c)3 organization that uses the transformative power of art to uplift trauma survivors, promote creative healing, and present inclusive artistic opportunities.
